Casey Thompson, Texas’ starting quarterback for the majority of the 2021 season, has entered the transfer portal. Thompson appeared in all 12 games for the Longhorns this season, assuming starting responsibilities over Hudson Card in Week 3 against Rice.
Thompson, who will be a redshirt senior in 2022, threw for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns, adding 157 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the ground. He stepped in for an ineffective Card late in the Week 2 loss to Arkansas, but was benched in early November against Iowa State after struggles of his own. He finished the season with 170 yards passing in the win over Kansas State.
Though he had his share of ups and downs in 2021, Thompson’s best performance came in last season’s Alamo Bowl when he stepped in for an injured Sam Ehlinger and threw four touchdowns in the 55-23 win over Colorado. Thompson, the son of former Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson, was a four-star prospect and ranked No. 291 overall in the Class of 2018 out of Newcastle (Oklahoma) High School.
“We just feel it’s in his best interest to seek something else,” the elder Thompson told the Austin American-Statesman’s Brian Davis.
His decision to transfer comes at an interesting time in the Steve Sarkisian era.
