UCF coach Gus Malzahn was in an automobile crash involving a motorcyclist on Monday night in Auburn, Alabama, multiple outlets report. Malzahn, who was driving, was not injured in the crash. However, the motorcycle driver was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition. The man is expected to recover from his injuries, according to WRBL.
Malzahn, 56, was back in Auburn to be with his wife and mother-in-law following the passing of his father-in-law, according to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy. UCF has not released a statement on Malzahn’s accident.
The coach at Auburn from 2013-2020, Malzahn led the program to a 68-35 record in eight seasons with an appearance in the 2014 BCS National Championship Game against Florida State. He previously served as the coach at Arkansas State for one season in 2012, and he was the offensive coordinator on Auburn’s 2010 national championship-winning team under Gene Chizik.
After being let go from Auburn in 2020, Malzahn was named coach at UCF, succeeding Josh Heupel, who took the same job at Tennessee. The Knights went 9-4 in Malzahn’s first season with a victory over Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl.
