Penn State may have missed out on securing a commitment from one defensive standout from the City of Brotherly Love, but the Nittany Lions are the early pick for the commitment of another rising defensive player from Philadelphia in the Class of 2023.
Jameial Lyons, a 6-4 edge rusher from Roman Catholic in Philadelphia, is. three-star recruit in the Class of 2023. Penn State is widely considered to be a runaway favorite in his recruiting process, and the first official crystal ball pick on 247Sports has been placed in favor of the Nittany Lions. Brian Dohn, a national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, cast his crystal ball pick for Penn State earlier this week.
The current recruiting prediction cooked up by the On3Sports recruiting prediction machine is also lopsided in favor of Penn State, with Penn State having a 98.9% chance of securing a commitment from the Philly recruit. Ryan Snyder, who covers Penn State recruiting for On3Sports, has a Penn State prediction on the board as well.
Penn State appears to be in the mix along with West Virginia, Nebraska, Cincinnati, Illinois, Pittsburgh, and Temple. Lyons holds a number of other offers, including from Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Boston College.
Lyons attended Penn State’s junior day event at the end of January. He also made a pair of unofficial visits to Happy Valley in 2021, in July for the Lasch Bash and again in September for the home game against Auburn. Lyons also attended Penn State’s football camp last summer. Penn State is the only school Lyons has reportedly visited at this point in time, which is why he is considered extremely likely to end up at Penn State.
But time will tell if any other school can make a worthy enough sales pitch to sway the predictions in another direction.
Lyons is scheduled to announce his college decision on August 4, 2022,…
